Since 2008, he is an economist at UCLA Anderson School of Management. He also holds the Hans Hufschmid Chair for Management. Wacziarg is also an associate researcher at the National Bureau of Economic Research. He was previously a professor at Stanford Graduate School of Business before joining UCLA. His research interests include international economics, politics, and economic growth.
Under the guidance of Robert Barro, Alberto Alesina and Dale W. Jorgenson, Wacziarg earned a Ph.D. degree in economics from Harvard in 1998. He was a consultant to the World Bank during his Ph.D., where he researched the connections between economic growth and trade policies.

He joined the Stanford Graduate School of Business in 1998 as an assistant professor in its Political Economy Group. He was awarded tenure in 2006. He was a National Fellow at Hoover Institution from 2002 to 2003. He moved to UCLA Anderson School of Management in 2008 as a professor of economics. Later, he became the chair of the global economy and management area. He was awarded the Hans Hufschmid chair in management in 2015.
