Rainer Bonhof is one of the most popular and richest Association Football Player who was born on March 29, 1952 in Emmerich Am Rhein, Germany. Rainer Bonhof, born 29 March 1952 in Emmerich am Rhein (North Rhine-Westphalia), is an ex-German footballer who played as a defensive midfielder and wing-back. He was also known for his strong shot and occasional bursts upfield. He was a key member of the 1974 West Germany team that won the World Cup, defeating the Netherlands 2-1 in final. Bonhof was a star for Borussia Monchengladbach, his club side. He won many domestic league and cup championships.
Bonhof was present in all matches of the 1978 FIFA World Cup. West Germany lost in the second round to Austria, their historical rivals. After his move to Valencia, Bonhof continued to play a significant role in the national team. The DFB lifted their ban on foreign-based players being selected for the national team’s roster due to his move and Uli Stielike’s. Although he played a part in qualifying for 1980 European Championships, he was not selected for the squad due to injuries. In spite of a strong Bundesliga campaign, his last appearance for the national side was against Brazil in a 1-4 loss. He was not selected for the national team in 1981-82 by FC Koln.
Bonhof’s playing career was abruptly ended by an ankle injury in 1983.
Bonhof went on to coach. He received his formal license in 1988, and has coached several teams. Bonhof was coach of Borussia Moenchengladbach in the late 1990s, but the team was relegated from the Bundesliga. He was appointed manager of the Scotland under-21 team in 2002, joining the Scotland national team setup some months after countryman Berti Vogts had been appointed Scotland manager. Bonhof was the first full-time manager of the Scotland under-21 team. The team enjoyed initial success under Bonhof, winning an away qualifier against Germany and progressing to the qualifying playoffs for the 2004 European Championship. Scotland lost in the playoffs on aggregate to Croatia. Bonhof continued as Scotland under-21 manager after Vogts resigned as national team manager in November 2004, but resigned in November 2005 after the team went on a run of 14 games without a victory. Bonhof had helped Darren Fletcher and James McFadden progress to the full national team.
Ray Clemence was a former Liverpool goalkeeper. He admitted that he feared Bonhof’s shots in 1977 after a European Cup final. Clemence was twice beaten by Bonhof at nearly the same locations at club and international levels in 1978. Clemence had been defeated by a Bonhof shot in 1977’s final, but that strike was too late.
