Raimo Olavi summanen, born March 2, 1962, is an ex-professional ice hockey forward who is currently the head coach at HIFK in the Finnish Elite League. He was also the Finnish national team’s coach. The Edmonton Oilers selected him in the sixth round, 125th overall, of the 1982 NHL Entry Draft. He spent his NHL career with Edmonton Canucks and Vancouver Canucks.
Summanen took over from Igor Nikitin in 2010 as Avangard Omsk’s head coach. Avangard Omsk is a top KHL side. Due to an 18-game winning streak that lasted from December to February, the team rose in strength and was crowned the best team in the regular season. Summanen’s harsh coaching style was reportedly causing some dissatisfaction among players. Summanen was relieved from his coaching duties prior to the Eastern Conference semifinals game 7, which the team lost. Officially, the club claimed that it was due to health problems. According to anonymous sources, however, it was actually a conflict with the players that caused the problem. According to some reports, Summanen tried to fight Jaromir Jagr, Avangard’s star wrestler.
Summanen was the coach of the Finnish National Team, which finished 2nd in the 2004 World Cup of Hockey. His reported rudeness towards players and managers led to Summanen’s dismissal. Janne Niinimaa, a defenceman, was fired after “conflicts” with the coaching staff. He also had a strained relationship with Timo Jutila, the manager of Finland’s national team.
