Gangjee was born and raised in Calcutta, where he still lives. He attended La Martiniere Calcutta. His amateur career was distinguished, including the 1997 Sri Lankan Amateur and the East India Amateur 1997 and 1999. In 1999, he would be ranked as India’s number-one amateur.
