Greedy Smith Biography

Greedy Smith is one of the most popular and richest Musician who was born on January 16, 1956 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Andrew McArthur Smith (16 January 1956 to 2nd December, 2019) also known as Greedy Smith was an Australian keyboardist, vocalist, harmonicist, and songwriter in the Australian new wave and pop group Mental As Anything. Smith composed many of their hits songs like “Live it Up” which reached No. 2. on the Australian singles chart. Smith was a singer-songwriter with a solo career, and had been in various bands, and was a TV and artist. Andrew “Greedy” Smith died on the 2nd of December aged 63 following suffering a heart attack. He is survived by his wife, Fiona Docker, and his son.

All of the early musicians of Mental As Anything are also artists. They’ve exhibited their works since 1982. Even though Smith isn’t as well popular for his art as his bandmate Reg Mombassa, of Mambo Graphics fame, is, his most famous art is the Storm Clouds Over the Piazza series, which was displayed in the Mentals III travelling art exhibition in 1997. The portraits are based on the infamous novel he never finished called Storm Clouds Over the Piazza which is a lengthy WWII story that he would like to discuss in interviews, but which is actually a fictional work in and of itself.

In an interview recorded on 30 October 2019 (five weeks before Smith’s death) with Alan Gilmour, from the Australian Songwriters Association, to honour him and Martin Plaza as the 2019 Australian Songwriters Hall of Fame Inductees, Smith stated “To have lived this long is a great thing.” He was survived by his fiancée, Fiona Docker, and his son.

On 3 December 2019 it was announced, via the band’s website, that Smith had died a day earlier: “It is with an incredibly heavy heart to announce that one of the founding members of Mental As Anything, Andrew Greedy Smith passed away last night from a heart attack.”

in 1982 Smith performed with Twohill in a group dubbed The Space Shuttle Ramblers that recorded an EP, but these tapes got destroyed during an incident in the studio before the release. In 1992 during his Mental As Anything sabbatical he started a new group, Greedy’s on the Loose that played shows and recorded but there was no release. In 1996, he recorded his own album, Love Harmonica, for TWA in his home studio. This led to live performances in a band called Greedy’s people, and the recording in full band, as well as the subsequent release of the album. The new release, released available on TWA it was renamed Greedy’s People . It also included an extra recording of Carpenters’ “Close to You”. The rock historian Ian McFarlane described Love Harmonica as an album that was “easy-listening love songs that featured latin, pop and jazz rhythms with lush harmonica as the lead instrument.”

born Andrew McArthur Smith in Sydney, Australia, he later was a student at North Sydney Boys High. In the early 1970s, he began to show an interest in art. and music, he enrolled in the East Sydney Technical College (now named the National Art School) in Darlinghurst in the late 1970s, while doing an unpaid job as an attendant in a bottle shop. In college, he was able to meet classmates, Martin Murphy, Chris O’Doherty, David Twohill and Steve Coburn, whose band, Mental As Anything, was playing at dances and art school parties since the beginning of May in 1976. When he was playing harmonica in a different band, Smith started appearing on stage with Mental As Anything from around December. Smith was eventually enticed by other Mental As Anything members to take up the keyboards of the old organ used for weddings in order to make their sound more complete and the band he was in quits. He earned the name “Greedy” after eating 15 pieces of chicken while performing one night.

Being the most outgoing members of Mental As Anything, in the beginning, it was common for him to do interviews for TV or radio, as well as press. This led to additional opportunities for media including hosting segments and episodes of the music show Countdown and Countdown, as well as the related Countdown Awards, and Sounds. In the latter half of the 1980s, there was a lot of judges in”Red Faces” on the “Red Faces” segment of Hey Hey It’s Saturday , and in the early 1990s , he hosts Tonight Live With Steve Vizard for a week , in absence of the host. In recent times, he appeared frequently on the music game program Spicks along with Specks.

In October 2019 the Australian Songwriters Association inducted Smith and Martin Plaza into the Australian Songwriters Hall of Fame.
