Rafael Peretz, Hebrew: RapaAel “rapiy”, pereTS – born 7 January 1956) and is an Israeli Orthodox rabbi. He is the leader of the Jewish Home party and a former military officer. Peretz was an original member of the Knesset to the Yamina alliance, but he left the group in order to join Netanyahu’s government.
Peretz’s July 2019 endorsement of gay conversion therapy drew criticism from the government and Israeli society. He claimed that he had personally experienced such therapy. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected Peretz’s comments as “unacceptable”. Peretz stated, on July 18, 2019, that he had rejected gay conversion therapy after protests.
Peretz was elected to lead the Jewish Home party on 4 February 2019. The party joined the Union of the Right-Wing Parties alliance for the April 2019 Knesset elections, with Peretz as the alliance’s lead candidate. He was elected to the Knesset as the coalition won five seats.
In May 2020, as Yamina switched to the opposition before the formation of the Netanyahu-Gantz unity government, Peretz resigned from Yamina and joined the Netanyahu government as the “Minister of Jerusalem Affairs and Heritage”.
Peretz made a controversial announcement in November 2014 that the Temple Mount had no religious significance for the Muslim religion. This was during a time of tension in Jerusalem. Peretz was quoted saying that “Ninety percent” of Arabs didn’t know anything about the Koran. I can tell you this with complete authority. We know more than most of them.” The IDF quickly distanced themselves from Peretz’s comments and said: “The Rabbi is sorry that his remarks offended Arab populations.” Peretz’s remarks were described by Ynet as “explosive”
