Ian Christopher Stanley (born 28 February 1957) is an English musician and record producer. He is also a songwriter. He was previously part of the English group Tears for Fears for most of the 1980s. He also played a pivotal role in the production of their multi-platinum-selling 2nd album Songs from the Big Chair.
After their success with Songs from the Big Chair, Stanley collaborated with Roland Orzabal on the 1986-related side project Mancrab which released one single “Fish for Life,” that was recorded for the soundtrack to the movie The Karate Kid Part II. Stanley also began work with the band on Tears for Fears’ third album, The Seeds of Love The Seeds of Love, but (along together with the co-producer Chris Hughes) left the project due to differences in the creative process. The most prominent contribution he made to the album, however they can be heard on the smash track “Sowing the Seeds of Love” and on the A-sides “Always in the Past” and “My Life in the Suicide Ranks.”
After offering them the use of his recording studio, Stanley became a member of Tears for Fears, contributing to the synthesizers, drum machines pianos, organs, as well as backing vocals on their initial three albums. He also wrote (with Roland Orzabal) many of their hits from 1983 to 1985. He also was member of the production team in this time while the band was working alongside the producer Chris Hughes at their studio The Wool Hall in Bath.

In the 1980s, Stanley has been producing such artists including Lloyd Cole and the Commotions the A-ha group, The Pretenders, Howard Jones, Ultra, Republica Naimee Coleman, Stephanie Kirkham, Natalie Imbruglia, Propaganda, The Human League and Tori Amos. He also played in The Sisters of Mercy re-recording of “Temple of Love”. Stanley also worked as an A&R specialist on behalf of Warners East West Records but quit in 1998.

He was also as a guest in the 1982 Tears for Fears live- streamed footage In My Mind’s Eye, and in the 1984 Tears for Fears documentary film Scenes from the Big Chair and also completed two world tour dates with the group.
Stanley’s most recent work was producing The Beautiful South’s album Superbi (2006), in part at his studio in Enniskerry, County Wicklow.
