Rafael Alkorta is one of the most popular and richest Association Football Player who was born on September 16, 1968 in Bilbao, Basque Country, Spain. Rafael Alkorta Martinez, a Spanish former footballer, was born 16 September 1968. He is currently the sporting director at Athletic Bilbao.

Alkorta was attracted to Real Madrid by his 1993-94 campaign. He was initially reluctant to sign for Real Madrid but was convinced due to Athletic’s poor financial position which was made better by the 350 million pesetas transfer fees. He formed a strong partnership with Fernando Hierro during his time at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, where he accumulated more 150 official appearances as well as two league titles.

Alkorta returned to Athletic in 1997–98, swapping teams with fellow defender Aitor Karanka. He helped the Basque side finish second in the first campaign upon his return and went on to feature regularly in the following years but, after only six matches in 2001–02, was released and decided to retire from the game aged nearly 34.

In the first competition, in Italy, Alkorta played ten minutes in a 2–1 group stage win over Belgium, starting in a further 11 matches (ten complete) in the other senior tournaments combined.

Alkorta was part of the Spanish national team’s three World Cups in the 1990s.

Alkorta was born in Bilbao and Biscay in 1978. He made his senior debut with the second team in 1978. He played 44 Segunda Division games before Howard Kendall promoted him to the senior team for the 1987-88 season. His debut came in a 0-1 away loss against Real Valladolid. Alkorta played in 172 La Liga matches and became an outstanding man marker.

Alkorta was an international player since May 1990, when Spain won a friendly away match 1-0 with Yugoslavia. He earned 54 caps during the following eight years. He represented Spain at the under-16, 18 and 21 levels in FIFA World Cups 1990, 1994, and 1998.

Alkorta’s younger brother, Óscar, was also a footballer who was a midfielder. A fellow Athletic Bilbao youth graduate (alongside José Félix Guerrero who also had a more famous sibling in the first team), the younger Alkorta never made it past the reserves and played out his career in Segunda División B; the brothers were on the staff at Athletic together for a few months in 1997, between Rafael’s return from Madrid and Óscar’s move to CD Aurrerá de Vitoria. Óscar later worked as a youth coach at Athletic Bilbao, working under his older sibling from 2019.
