Bonk was born in Czechoslovakia. He began his hockey career with Zlin in Czech Extraliga and Slezan Opava in Junior Czech league. In 1993, Bonk moved to North America with the goal of playing in National Hockey League (NHL). He was signed by Las Vegas Thunder (International Hockey League) as a 17 year old. Bonk became a sensation in the IHL. He had already scored 42 goals and 45 assists, for 87 points in just 76 games. Bonk was noticed by NHL scouts and he was at or near the top on all top prospect lists for 1994 NHL Entry Draft. Bonk was a top prospect due to his size (17 years), youth, and ability adapt quickly to the more physical hockey style in North America.
The Ottawa Senators selected Bonk third in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft. He was the first forward to be selected. While the NHL was closed by owners’ lockout, Bonk returned to Las Vegas and scored 20 points in 33 games. Bonk’s debut NHL season in 1994-95 was disappointing. He scored just 3 goals and 11 assists in 42 games. After five years of NHL hockey, Bonk was a more experienced player and became one of the most skilled forwards in the league by 1999-2000. Under the guidance of head coach Jacques Martin, he went on to play 10 seasons for the Senators and eventually became the #1 center for the team.
On 22 July 2009, after 969 games in the NHL it was announced that Bonk agreed to a one-year contract with Lokomotiv Yaroslavl to continue his career in the Russian Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). After only seven games into the 2009–10 season, Bonk left Yaroslavl to return the Czech Republic with Oceláři Třinec in the Czech Extraliga on 8 October 2009. Radek posted 17 points in 39 games for the season with Oceláři to earn a two-year contract extension on 2 May 2010.
