Due to her premature birth, Watson is a triplet. She has mild cerebral palsy. Guillain Barre Syndrome was diagnosed at 21. This caused rapid muscle weakness in her entire body and damage to the peripheral nervous system. It led to low-level quadriplegia. It is not known what caused it. Prior to developing Guillain Barre Syndrome she was a full- time student at university, worked as a swim instructor, and earned honors in AMEB piano, and music theory exams. Watson received the Leanne Crawl Goodwill award in 2009. This award recognizes students who show exceptional kindness and goodwill towards others, are willing to work hard for their success, and have the ability to overcome difficult situations and still care about others. Watson was a leader in high school, and she was also awarded “Community Spirit”. She was named the Queensland Young Volunteer of the year in 2011. Watson is the Guillain Barre Syndrome Foundation of Australia’s official ambassador. She provides education and support to medical staff as well as direct support to patients, their families and their families. She is currently volunteering at Queensland Children’s Hospital as an Operating Theatre Support. She is a member the Queensland Health Disability Advisory Committee.
2016 – Most Improved Atlete (Sporting Wheelies and Disabled Association Awards)
At the 2016 Rio Paralympics, she won the gold medal in the Women’s 50m Freestyle S4 in a Paralympic record time of 40.13. Watson became the first swimmer classed S5 or below, to win gold for Australia this millennium.
At the 2016 Australian Swimming Championships, despite coming 8th in the multi class 50m Freestyle, she achieved an A qualifying time for the Rio Paralympics and at her first nationals, which also doubled as selection trials, she made her first Paralympic team.

Rachael Elizabeth Watson OAM, born 30 January 1992, is an Australian Paralympic swimmer. She holds the world record for the S4 50m freestyle. Watson represented Australia at Rio Paralympics 2016. She became the first S4 woman to win a Gold Medal in the 50m Freestyle at Paralympic Games.
Watson began swimming as part her rehabilitation. Guillain-Barre Syndrome categorized Watson as an S4 swimmer in 2015. She broke 16-year-old Australian records in the 50m and 100m freestyle, 200m freestyle, 50m butterfly, and 200m freestyle. Swimmers classified as S4 have weakness in their arms, hands, core and legs. At the 2017 Australian Swimming Championships, she swam 37.87 in the Women’s 50m Freestyle multi class final to break the previous S4 world record of 39.52. She broke the record in the heat as well in a time of 38.66. She won her first Australian national title and the world-record-breaking swim earned her a place on her first World Championships team. Watson received a standing ovation from the crowd and a hug from Dawn Fraser, which she describes as one of the most memorable moments of her life.
