Umberger, Jr. was born May 3, 1982 and is an ex-American professional ice hockey centre. Umberger was drafted in the 16th round of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft by Vancouver Canucks. He has also played in the National Hockey League (NHL), for the Philadelphia Flyers as well as the Columbus Blue Jackets.
After a successful career as a Pittsburgh Hornets developmental player, Umberger started his USA Hockey National Team Development Program career. The Vancouver Canucks drafted him in the NHL Entry Draft 2001 in the 16th round. Umberger, who was planning to become a professional hockey player with the Canucks, left Ohio State in his senior year. However, Umberger was not able to agree to a deal and he sat out the whole 2003-04 season. In exchange for Martin Rucinsky and Martin Grenier, he was traded to the New York Rangers in March 2004. He was signed by the Philadelphia Flyers as a free agent on June 16, 2004, three months later. In 2005-06, he was called up to the Flyers roster.
Umberger made his senior U.S. debut in the 2006 IIHF World Championship in Latvia.
On June 20, 2008, Umberger was traded from the Flyers with their fourth round pick (Drew Olson) in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft to the Columbus Blue Jackets for the Blue Jackets’ first round pick, via the Colorado Avalanche (Luca Sbisa) drafted 19th overall and a third round pick (Marc-André Bourdon) in the Draft.
2001 was Umberger’s second year playing with the U.S. junior hockey team at the 2001 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships, Russia. The 2002 edition was in the Czech Republic. The U.S. finished fifth in both of these tournaments.

Umberger is a center and left winger. He played high school hockey for the Plum Mustangs in 1997-98 in the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League. He accumulated 116 points in 26 games during his sophomore and final seasons. He won the WPIHL AAA League Championship by scoring the game-winning goal against Central Catholic (Pittsburgh), in front of a full house at Harmarville’s BladeRunners Ice Complex. Umberger became the second Western Pennsylvanian-born hockey player to play in the NHL after Ryan Malone. He scored his first career NHL goal on November 22, 2005, for the Flyers against the Lightning. On July 6, 2006, the Flyers announced that they had signed him to a two-year contract.

Upon sitting out the entirety of the 2016–17 season, Umberger attempted to resurrect his NHL career in signing a professional tryout agreement with the Dallas Stars on July 14, 2017. He participated in the Stars training camp and pre-season before he was released from his try-out without a contract on September 27, 2017.
