Datuk Arumugam Rengasamy, also known as Spiderman, was a legend Malaysian football player from Selangor. He was known for his long arms and complex saves, earning him the nickname “Spiderman”. He was born in Port Klang (Selangor) on 31 January 1953. He began his football career young.
R. Arumugam was killed in a car accident on Federal Highway near Petaling Jaya, 18 December 1988. Maria Selvie, his wife, and Subha Arumugam, and Rubha Arumugam, were his survivors.
The character of Muthu Kumar in Ola Bola, a 2016 film chronicling the Malaysian national team’s road to the 1980 Olympic qualifiers, was based on Arumugam.

Selangor FA made his debut in 1971, when he was just 18 years old. From 1972 to 1988, Selangor FA represented him in the Malaysia Cup tournament. During this time, the Malaysia Cup was won eight times.
R. Arumugam was selected to the Malaysian national football team in 1973 in order to play in the World Cup qualifying rounds matches in Seoul, South Korea. Malaysia won the Merdeka Tournament in 1973. He represented Malaysia at the 1973, 1975 and 1977, 1979, 1979, 1981. 1983, 1983, 1985 Sea Games. He was awarded a bronze medal by the national team at the 1974 Asian Games, Tehran. Malaysia was also eligible for the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games. However, Malaysia chose to boycott the Games. R. Arumugam, a member of the Malaysian national team, recorded 196 caps. These were not all A-class international matches. His personal goal was 200 caps. In 1986, he retired.
In recognition of his services to both state and nation, the Football Association of Selangor and Public Bank, where Arumugam had been employed, started a trust fund in his name on 5 January 1989. On 4 June 2011, Yang Dipertuan Agong posthumously awarded him the Panglima Jasa Negara (PJN), which carries the title “Datuk”.
