Pretinha and Roseli were both assigned to Washington Freedom during the first draft of the American professional Women’s United Soccer Association. Pretinha scored Pretinha’s only goal in the league’s first match, a penalty kick at halftime against the Bay Area CyberRays. Pretinha was the leader in scoring in the first five league games. She finished the campaign with five goals, having played in 21 league games. Washington traded Pretinha the CyberRays at the end of her inaugural season.

The knee injury sustained by Pretinha in July 2003 ruled her out of Brazil’s squad for the 2003 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

With the collapse of WUSA and the lack of structure in Brazilian women’s football, Pretinha was without a club while recuperating from her injury. She played in the Athens Olympics as a free agent, then joined Japanese L. League team INAC Kobe Leonessa in 2005.

Pretinha was a kid who played football on the streets of Rio with her brothers. At the age of 14, she joined Mendanha Futebol Clube, her first club. After being promoted to the Brazilian national team, Pretinha was signed by the women’s section of CR Vasco da Gama. Pretinha earned approximately $3,400 per months from her Vasco contract at the time of 1999 Women’s World Cup.

Brazil’s women’s football team was preparing for the 1991 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The team’s top–goalscorer, Pretinha missed the culmination of the CyberRays’ 2003 campaign after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee during an international friendly between Brazil and the United States in July 2003.
