Gunneswaran’s 2018 was a breakthrough year. He won two of the four ATP Challenger singles titles he reached, and he also won three. He defeated Mohamed Safwat to win his first ATP Challenger singles title, at the Kunming Open. He defeated Saketh Myneni in Bengaluru Open’s final to win his second Challenger singles title. He was runner-up in the Ningbo Challenger as well as the Pune Challenger. He also reached the final of his second ATP Challenger doubles at Santaizi ATP Challenger, Taipei in April. There he partnered up with Saketh Myneni.

On 11 February 2019, he reached a career-high singles ranking of 97, debuting in the top-100 singles rankings.

Next, he qualified for the Miami Open, a back-to-back main draw appearance at a Masters event. He lost in the opening round to Jaume Munar.
