Prabhat Jha Biography

Prabhat Jha is one of the most popular and richest Epidemiologist who was born on February 12, 1965 in Ranchi, Jharkhand, India. Prabhat Jha MD OC (born February 12, 1965 in India) is an Indian-Canadian health economist and epidemiologist. He founded the Centre for Global Health Research at St. Michael’s Hospital, Toronto, Canada [UofT]. His research focuses primarily upon premature deaths due to HIV/AIDS, tobacco and alcohol, as well as maternal and child health and infectious and non-communicable disease.

Jha was a team leader for the World Bank after graduation, and contributed to the development the Second National HIV/AIDS Control Program (India) Later, he was a senior scientist in poverty and health for the World Health Organization’s Commission on Macroeconomics and Health.

Since 2006, Jha has been a Senior Fellow at Massey College, University of Toronto, Canada. In 2007, he was appointed professor of epidemiology at Dalla Lana School of Public Health. Jha was named the inaugural Endowed Chair for Disease Control at Dalla Lana School in 2010.

Jha studied medicine at University of Manitoba. He earned his MD and went to Oxford, England as a Rhodes Scholar. There, he was mentored in statistics by Sir Richard Peto. In 1992, he successfully defendd his PhD in epidemiology.

He founded the Centre for Global Health Research at St. Michael’s Hospital, Toronto in 2002. There he directed large-scale public health studies including the Indian Million Death Study, which examines premature mortality. Jha’s research is focused on premature deaths in developing countries. He has been internationally recognized for his work regarding smoking and tobacco-related mortality. He is also a member the Disease Control Priorities Project.

Jha was born in Ranchi, India the state of Jharkhand. When he was six years old, his family moved to Winnipeg Canada where his father worked as a civil engineer and went on to become an NDP member of Manitoba’s legislative assembly. Together with his older brother and younger sister, he was raised by his mother.
