Ponvannan is one of the most popular and richest Actor who was born on September 23, 1964 in Erode, Tamil Nadu, India. Ponvannan, an Indian actor and director, was born 23 September 1964. He has also worked in Tamil cinematography and television. Ponvannan began his career as an artist (painter), and then he trained as a writer and director under Bharathiraja. After making his directorial debut in 1992 with Annai Vayal, he went on to direct the critically-acclaimed venture Nadhi Karaiyinile (2003). Since then, he has been a supporting actor in films and won acclaim for his roles in films like Paruthiveeran (2007, Ayan (2008), Kaaviya Thalaivan (2014). He was elected Vice President of Nadigar Sangam in October 2015 alongside Karunas.

Jamela (2003) was his second directorial effort. It featured Suvalakshmi and Rajan P.Dev, as well as Ramji. This story told of an ego conflict between two men that destroys the life of a submissive woman. Ponvannan was impressed by Sara Abubakar’s book and purchased the script rights. He then submitted his screenplay to the National Film Development Corporation of India for financing. Jameela was filmed in Pondicherry for 17 days at a cost totaling 35 lakh rupees. The film received positive reviews at screenings and was well- received by critics. It was selected to be shown in the noncompetitive section of the 2002 Shanghai International Film Festival.

Ponvannan made a comeback as an actor through Ameer’s Paruthiveeran (2007), portraying the father of Priyamani’s character, and the success of the film garnered further acting opportunities for him. He won acclaim for his performances as the upright police officer in Mysskin’s Anjathe (2009) and as the shrewd customs official in Ayan (2009). Ponvannan played a stage actor in Vasanthabalan’s period film Kaaviya Thalaivan (2014), winning acclaim for his performance in an ensemble cast.

The film was censored in 2001. It received a theatrical release in India under the title Nadhi Karaiyinile in November 2003. This was because Viswas Sundar, the distributor, did not want it to be classified as “Muslim” film.

Ponvannan started his career in Erode as an artist. He met Valampuri John and was soon hired by producer Kovaithambi’s Motherland Pictures. He was exposed to the production house and began to learn from director Bharathiraja. He also helped him write dialogues for his films. Ponvannan was gradually introduced to Bharathiraja as an actor. He played supporting roles in director Pudhu Nellu Pudhu Naathu (1991), Karuthamma (944) and Pasumpon (95). He also produced the low-budget movie Annai Vayal during this period. This film went unnoticed. He was often the antagonist in films throughout the 1990s.

Ponvannan wed Saranya, a National Award-winning actress and daughter of A.Malayalam director A. B. Raj in 1995.

The film did not perform well at the box office, but won three State film awards including the recognition as Best Film portraying Women in Good Light. The Hindu described Ponvannan’s direction as an “absorbing presentation”, adding “his sensitivity comes to the fore throughout the film”. His next venture, the comedy drama Gomathi Nayagam (2004), had its title taken from the name of his popular character from the television serial Annamalai. The film had a low-key release and did not perform well commercially.
