Platon studied graphic design in Saint Martin’s School of Art, where he had his first encounter with photography. He received his master’s degree in fine arts at the Royal College of Art, where he met John Hind of Vogue, his mentor and instructor.

Platon started in fashion photography and portraiture after he graduated from college in 1992. Platon moved to New York from London in 1992 to start his commercial career at George magazine, John Kennedy Jr. Some of Platon’s commercial work included photographing for Levi’s and IBM, Nike and Motorola, as well as companies like Rayban, Tanqueray and Kenneth Cole. His photos have been featured on the covers of many magazines, including Esquire, George, and Time. In 2008, Platon was appointed staff photographer at The New Yorker to replace Richard Avedon. His first assignment was a portfolio for the Little Rock Nine, which celebrated the civil rights movement.
