Guard was Edith Holden’s role in the twelve-part adaptation of The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady, (Central) in 1984. The drama attracted 13 million viewers at its peak and increased Guard’s popularity. However, it also marked the end for her first television career. She had married Steve Goldie, the BBC’s production director and producer. In July 1984 she gave birth their daughter Sama. Although she did not return to television until 1986 (although she focused on her stage career, playing Antigone in the National Theatre (1983), and Faye at A Chorus of Disapproval (1986), She played an abusive mother (A Couple of Charlies) and an abused woman (The Life and Loves of a She-Devil, BBC).
In 1998, she graduated with a first-class degree in English and drama from the University of Greenwich. After gaining an MPhil from Royal Holloway, University of London, she gained a PhD in 2005 on early modern drama from the same institution. Guard now works as a lecturer and drama programme leader at the University of Greenwich, her published research includes “A Defence of the First English Actress”, and she appeared on BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour to discuss Shakespeare’s women.
Guard quit the RSC in 1978 and was cast as Maggie Tulliver in a BBC serialization of The Mill on the Floss (1978). She was followed by Barbara Mallen, Maria Marten (BBC 1980), Prue (BBC 1982), and three roles for the BBC Television Shakespeare: Miranda, Diana, and Hermia, in A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1981). On BBC Radio, she was also a Tess of the d’Urbervilles actress in 1982 and Bella Wilfer as Our Mutual Friend (1984). Her desire to play more modern and diverse roles was clearly evident in her portrayal of a 22-year-old woman in Play for Today The Flipside of Dominick Hide (1980), and its sequel Another Flip for Dominick (82). In 1981, she portrayed Cordelia Gray as P. D. James’ sleuth in An Unsuitable Job for a Woman (1981), which was her only film role.

Guard briefly studied at the University of Montreal. She first studied English and drama, then she moved to nursing and returned to Britain to study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Her first major project was the sitcom Close to Home, with Paul Nicholas (LWT, 1990), followed by two series of the comedy-drama The Riff Raff Element (BBC, 1993–94), All or Nothing at All with Hugh Laurie (LWT, 1993), India Wilkes in Scarlett (1994), John Sullivan’s Roger Roger (BBC, 1998-2000), Hope and Glory with Lenny Henry (BBC, 1999), Hearts and Bones (BBC, 2000) and two series of The Creatives (1998-2000).
