He was born in Moscow, 1958 into a family that included secular assimilate Jews. 7 with a strong focus on mathematics and physics. After graduating in 1975, he made the decision to leave Soviet Union and move to Israel. He started to study Hebrew with a clandestine group and later Torah and Judaism.

In 1979 Polonsky was one of the founders a secret network to study Torah in Moscow. Samizdat was his involvement, publishing (via photocopying) guides to Judaism, Jewish life, and Torah commentaryaries.

1987: one of the initiators in the founding of the Israeli branch of Machanaim; remained a faculty member and editor-in-chief until 2012.

After applying for immigration to Israel, Polonsky became a refusenik for 7 years and finally immigrated to Israel in 1987 at the onset of the Perestroika. He has been living in Beit El since 1991.

He was a pioneer of Machanaim and taught Judaism during his underground activities in Moscow (1977-1987). He now lives in Israel and is active in modernizing Judaism. He is also a researcher on topics related to the late Rav Kook. Polonsky is also the author of “Bible Dynamics”, a commentary on Torah. Dr. Polonsky founded EJWiki as an academic encyclopedia about Jewish and Israeli topics.
