Vierchowod, also known as lo Zar, was a left-footed centreback who was strong and physically fit. He was also known for his tough tackling style and tight marking of his opponents. In his early career, he was primarily a man-marking “stopper”, but he also served as a defensive-minded foil to a sweeper. His speed, strong physique, anticipation, positional awareness, decisiveness in his challenges and ability to read the game allowed him to break down opposing play, take back possession and intercept loose balls. These attributes enabled him to excel in the zonal mark defensive system in later years. He was not the most technically skilled or refined defender at first, but he improved his tactical and technical skills as he progressed in his career. He was not tall enough to be a centre-back but he was strong in the air due to his elevation. His penchant for scoring goals with headers is what made him one of the most prolific Italian defenses. He was praised for his tough playing style but also his fair play and leadership skills.
Vierchowod, who scored two goals between 1981-93, was capped 45 time with the Italy national team. At 21 years old, he made his international debut in a friendly match against the Netherlands in Montevideo on 6 January 1981. This was in the 1981 “Mundialito” tournament. Although he didn’t play in the 1982 FIFA World Cup winning squad, he was part of it. Vierchowod was part of the Italian squad that participated in the 1986 FIFA World Cup. He also appeared three times at the 1990 FIFA World Cup as Italy placed third on its own soil under Azeglio Vicini. After reaching the semi-finals, he was promoted to manager. He is also the longest goal scorer in the history the Italy national team. His goal in a 1994 FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Malta ended in a 6-1 victory for the Azzurri under manager Arrigo Sacchi. Vierchowod was also a participant in the 1984 Summer Olympic Games. Italy finished fourth after reaching the semi-finals. However, he has never represented Italy at a UEFA European Championship.
In a 2008 interview with Argentine magazine El Gráfico, Argentine footballer Diego Maradona, widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time, dubbed Vierchowod his toughest opponent, stating that “[Vierchowod] was an animal, he had muscles to the eyelashes. It was easy to pass by him, but then when I raised my head, he was in front of me again. I would have to pass him two or three more times and then I would pass the ball because I couldn’t stand him anymore”. Throughout his career, Maradona gave Vierchowod the nickname Hulk.
