McNab is a member of one of the ice hockey’s most famous families. His father, Max McNab, was a center-level journeyman who was the winner of the Stanley Cup with the Detroit Red Wings in the year 1950. Max’s long and successful career as a coach and player was acknowledged by his hometown in Watson, Saskatchewan, where the park for recreation is named for him. Peter’s younger brother David worked as an NHL Scout and is currently the Assistant G.M. for the Anaheim Ducks.
After his excursion in the 1995 Stanley Cup Finals, McNab was transferred with the Boston Bruins. He had the most successful seasons in the NHL life in Boston and scored at 35 goals or 75 points six times in consecutive seasons and participating at the 1997 NHL All-Star Game. He scored two times an overtime winner. On the 23rd of December 1979, while playing played at Madison Square Garden in New York, McNab, teammate Mike Milbury, and several other Bruins were seen climbing into the crowd to confront the crowd. McNab took part in a fight with one fan. McNab was quickly joined by Milbury who took off the fan’s shoe , and then began to hit the person with the shoe. In April, 1981 North Stars goaltender Don Beaupre prevented the McNab penalty shot. It was being the very first penalty shot shot by a member of the Bruins in a game of the playoffs. Today McNab is one of Boston’s top ten top scorers in points, goals and scoring in playoff games.
After retiring, McNab began his broadcasting career as a color analyst for the Devils starting in the 1987–88 season. After eight years broadcasting on SportsChannel for the Devils, he moved to Colorado for the inaugural season of the Colorado Avalanche. He was also a TV announcer on NBC as an analyst on NHL on NBC during the 2006 Winter Olympic games in Torino, Italy, and as a color analyst on TNT for the Olympic games in Nagano, Japan. He also served as TSN’s studio analyst and host for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah.
On June 8, 2009, McNab signed a multi-year deal with Altitude, where he started his 14th season as color commentator for the Colorado Avalanche at the beginning of the 2009-2010 NHL season.
The family was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, McNab spent his childhood living in British Columbia before moving to San Diego, California at age 14. There, his father was the head coach of the minor league San Diego Gulls. Peter initially was an outstanding baseball player. He enrolled at in the University of Denver (DU) as a student on a baseball scholarship. He later joined the team hockey and was a WCHA All-Star team member in 1973. In the 1970s, NCAA players did not make it into the National Hockey League, but McNab was chosen to the Buffalo Sabres while playing forward for the DU Pioneers in 1972.

Peter Maxwell McNab (born May 8th 1952) is a former Canadian-American professional player of ice hockey who played on 954 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season games from 1973 until 1987. He was an official color commentary for the Colorado Avalanche since the inaugural 1995-96 season.
McNab was the leader of McNab led the Cincinnati Swords of the American Hockey League (AHL) in scoring between 1973 and 1974, despite only playing in 49 out of 76 games. He also was first introduced to Buffalo the same season. While playing for Buffalo McNab, the forward made his debut NHL goal on the 15th of December 1973, in a game with the Minnesota North Stars.
The Bruins traded McNab to the Vancouver Canucks in 1984; he played in Vancouver for two seasons before signing with the New Jersey Devils, for whom his father Max was the general manager at the time. He also made his international debut for Team USA at the 1986 Ice Hockey World Championship tournament in Moscow. He retired from professional hockey at the end of the 1986–87 season after playing two seasons in New Jersey.
