Peter Simon Barnes (born 10 June 1957) is a famous English Former international soccer player and is the son of famous trainer and Scout Ken Barnes. He is one of the very few players to play for Manchester City and Manchester United.
Barnes was sold by the new manager Malcolm Allison in 1979, and then joined West Bromwich Albion for a cost of PS748,000, the club’s record transfer that wasn’t reached until Kevin Kilbane broke through the PS1 million mark 18 years after. Barnes finished as the top scorer of the club in 1979-80, scoring 15 goals. “The “Baggies” finished fourth in 1980-81 under the direction of Ron Atkinson. Barnes was signed by Leeds United in 1981 for PS750,000 and the PS180,000 “tariffs”. However, Leeds director Allan Clarke played him as striker. Barnes did not adapt to the new role and scored just one goal in the top 30 games before Leeds were forced to drop into the Second Division in 1981-82. The assistant manager Martin Wilkinson remarked that “We are not asking Peter to run his blood to water, but we do want to see him get a bit of a sweat occasionally.” Barnes made an application for transfer, and was handed an PS750 club fine for remarks he made to newspaper editors. Clarke tried to sell Barnes for Nottingham Forest for Garry Birtles as well as transfer him to Manchester City for Trevor Francis However, it was not successful.
He was transferred back to Manchester City in 1987, but soon fell out of favour and was loaned out to Bolton Wanderers, Port Vale and Wimbledon. After leaving Maine Road in 1988, he embarked on a remarkable tour of global football, playing a handful of games for Hull City, SC Farense (in two spells), Bolton Wanderers, Sunderland, Stockport County, Footscray JUST, Bury, Drogheda United, Tampa Bay Rowdies, Stafford Rangers, Northwich Victoria, Wrexham, Radcliffe Borough, Mossley, Hamrun Spartans, and Cliftonville. This took him to Portugal, Australia, Malta, the United States, and both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
Since August 2010, he has been based in Kuala Lumpur, working as a Premier League pundit for Malaysian network Astro, and its thrice-weekly FourFourTwo TV programme. On the night that his former club Manchester City clinched the 2011–12 Premier League title, the normally reserved Barnes sang a rendition of “Blue Moon” during the post-game show in Astro’s studios. He has continued his father’s legacy, running soccer schools for impoverished local children.
Barnes had two assists in his nine matches for the England Under-21 team, and both of which were against Norway. Barnes made his full England debut Wembley on the 16th of November, 1977, scoring the 2-0 victory over Italy. But the Italians had qualified prior to England at the 1998 World Cup. The team scored an equalizer against Wales during the 1998 British Home Championship and against Scotland in the next year. He was later able to participate during five England’s qualifying matches in the 1988 European Championships, scoring in the 3-0 victory over Bulgaria in the Vasil Levski National Stadium however, he was not selected for the event itself. He played in two qualifying matches in 1982’s World Cup, defeats to Norway and Switzerland and Norway, but was not chosen for the tournament. The last time he played for England was in a international game on the 25th of May 1982 during a friendly game against the Netherlands. He earned a total of 22 caps and scored four goals in international competition, and was also a part of his country in England A team.
