Strickland was a student at DeMatha Catholic High School near Washington, D.C., where he played basketball in high school in the team of Morgan Wootten. Then he went to at the University of Pittsburgh where he was a member of Pittsburgh’s Pittsburgh Panthers (1975-1979). As a member of the Panthers, Strickland was a three-year starter and a two-year captain.
