Halkitis studies the ways in which risk-taking can be affected by contextual, interpersonal and cultural factors, particularly in the context of the AIDS epidemic and drug abuse within the United States, and this research has been financed by a variety of public and private organizations, like those from the National Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, New York City Department of Health, New York State AIDS Institute, New York Community Trust, United Way of America, and the American Psychological Foundation. His research is human health, human behavior and growth, with particular application to the areas of drug abuse and HIV/AIDS and has dealt with many of the major public and social health issues of the moment.

Halkitis has earned his B.A. with a major in Biology as well as Psychology at Columbia University, his masters in Human Development and Learning from City University of New York (CUNY): Hunter College, an MS in Education Psychology at CUNY: Graduate Center, and a Ph.D. in Quantitative methods in the field of Educational as well as Psychological Research from CUNY: Graduate Center. Prior to his move to Rutgers, Halkitis was previously the Associate Director of Research & Doctoral Studies, Professor of the Applied Psychology as well as Public Health, and Director of the Center for Health, Identity, Behavior & Prevention Studies (CHIBPS) in the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development which is an affiliate that is part of New York University. Halkitis is actively involved in the governance of and is a member of the American Psychological Association Committee on Psychology and AIDS, (COPA) from 2010 to 2012 and the Committee on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Concerns, Halkitis is also a researcher affiliated with the Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center at the New York University School of Medicine. and Co-Director of NYU’s Clinical and Translational Science Institute TL1 Predoctoral program. In the past, prior to these position, Halkitis was Director of Research and Co-Director of Research at Gay Men’s Health Crisis.
