She wrote a variety of non-fiction pieces in the 1990s, such as the 1996 biographical work on k.d. Lang, the Queerest Locations The Queerest Places: The National Guide to Gay and Lesbian Historic Sites (1997) as well as The Lesbian and Gay Book of Love and Marriage: Making The Stories of Our Lives (1998). Between 1997 and 2005, she wrote a weekly column “Lesbian Notions”, which was distributed to LGBT publications throughout all across the United States. She also wrote numerous productions for stage at Pittsburgh, New York, and D.C.

The family was raised and born within Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Martinac was educated at Chatham College and the College of William and Mary. She worked at Prentice Hall and the West Virginia State Museum and Prentice Hall before joining the editorial collective of WomaNews in 1982. She was appointed production director for The Feminist Press in 1985 She joined the editorial group that runs the magazine feminist Conditions at the end of 1988. In addition, she was appointed Co-Chair of the board for the city’s Lesbian and Gay Community Services Center in the year 1990. She was the editor-in-chief for Q Syndicate, an LGBT company that syndicates from 2001 until 2009.
Her first novel was an anthology of short stories that she wrote with Carla Tomaso titled Voyages Out One and was released in 1989. The book was nominated to win the Lambda Literary Award for Lesbian Debut Fiction at the 2nd Lambda Literary Awards.
In 2014 Martinac moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, where she teaches creative writing at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. The Ada Decades, her first novel since 1997, was published in 2017 and was a finalist for the Ferro-Grumley Award for LGBT Fiction. Her fifth novel, Clio Rising, was published in April 2019.
