Paul Reinhart Biography

Paul Reinhart is one of the most popular and richest Ice Hockey Player who was born on January 6, 1960 in Kitchener, Canada. Paul Gerard Reinhart (born January 6 1960) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey defenseman playing for Atlanta Flames, Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks in the National Hockey League (NHL). Reinhart was a 1st round selection by Atlanta 12th overall during the 1979 NHL Entry Draft and immediately joined the NHL. The team relocated him to Calgary in 1980. He played for a total of nine seasons for the Flames team until he was transferred into Vancouver at the end of 1988. He was an all-star two times and played for Team Canada on three occasions with bronze medals won during the World Championships in 1982 and 1983. The back issues that affected him throughout his career, and eventually caused him to retire in 1990. Moving to Vancouver after his professional career, Reinhart became a stock market investor and financier. He briefly played as a player with Vancouver Ravens Vancouver Ravens of the National Lacrosse League in the beginning of 2000.

After moving to Calgary together with the franchise in the 1980-81 season, Reinhart gained his 67-point mark during the regular season, and was held the lead in the league in assists during playoffs with 14 assists. Reinhart was named to the Canadian team to the 1981 Canada Cup tournament, but injured his ankle and played in just two games. He was a constant offensive catalyst for the team scoring 61 points during 1981-82. He also set the franchise record for points scored by defencemen, scoring 75 points in 1982-83. His total career with 250 total points established the Flames record for the franchise record for a defensive player. He was back with Team Canada following both seasons to participate for the World Championships. He was awarded bronze medals by Team Canada in 1982 and 1983. He also was named Canada’s top defenseman in 1983.

Reinhart suffered a serious injury midway through the 1983–84 season. Skating behind his net during a game against the Winnipeg Jets, his skate caught a rut and he twisted his back as he fell. He had to be carried off the ice on a stretcher, and was initially diagnosed with back spasms. He was later diagnosed as having suffered a herniated disc. He missed 51 games as a result of the injury, but scored a goal and an assist on his return, a 4–1 victory over the Hartford Whalers. Despite missing the majority of the season, Reinhart was the Flames’ offensive leader in the 1984 playoffs, leading the team and finishing first amongst all players who did not reach the finals with 17 points.

Though he turned down an offer to play with Team Canada at the 1984 Canada Cup due to his back, Reinhart remained healthy for the 1984–85 season, scoring a career high 23 goals to go with 67 points in 75 games. He also appeared in his first NHL All-Star Game, playing in front of his home fans at the 1985 game in Calgary. Recurring back spasms again forced him to miss much of the 1985–86 season; he was limited to 32 games. Reinhart remained healthy in 1986–87, finishing fourth in the league amongst defencemen with 69 points. He scored his 100th career goal, playing at centre, while recording a hat trick in a 6–5 win over the Edmonton Oilers on November 24, 1986. His chronic back issues worsened in 1987–88, as he played only 14 games for the Flames, scoring four points.

The Atlanta Flames selected Reinhart with their first round pick, 12th overall, in the 1979 NHL Entry Draft. While he was initially scheduled for a place on Team Canada for the 1980 Winter Olympics, the Flames were able to convince Reinhart to join the team and start an active career in the NHL instead. When he joined the Flames during in the season 1979 – 1980 NHL season at the age of 19, Reinhart was an infant player make an appearance with the team in that season in the history of the franchise. He played at 79 times for Atlanta in the final game, and was the most prolific defenceman in the team. The total score of 47 points placed him second only to Ray Bourque for the overall top spot among rookie defencemen.

On the surface, Reinhart scored a total of 104 points while defenseman for the Rangers between 1975 and 1978. He then broke out during the 1978-79 season, after he moved to into the centre of the season. Reinhart scored 51 goals as well as 78 assists to score the team in 66 games, scoring 129 points to be the fifth in overall OMJHL scoring. As captain of the team in his final year Reinhart was awarded numerous team honors throughout his time in Kitchener and was awarded three awards for being an “best defensive ability” on the team.

Reinhart started his junior career playing for his hometown team Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Major Junior Hockey League (OMJHL) in 1975-76. However, when the OMJHL removed the rules that allowed teams to shield midget players at the end of the season and he became eligible for the draft in 1976. Peterborough Petes claimed him as the Peterborough Petes claimed him with the third pick at the time of the July 1976 selection even though Reinhart along with his parents members had stated that he would not join any other team than Kitchener. The agent for him, Alan Eagleson, threatened to sue the league and the team to court to get them to follow Reinhart’s demands. The dispute was not resolved until the end of November, when the Petes sold Reinhart with Kitchener within a deal with three teams that included with the Oshawa Generals. The league was forced to repeal the rule that prohibited teams from trading their first round draft picks in order to allow the deal to be completed and also to avoid the possibility of lawsuits from Eagleson.

Though his position for the majority of his career was in defence, his offensive ability and speed meant that his teams occasionally played him at forward. At times, the Flames had him playing 30 minutes per game as he was often used at centre while also taking regular shifts at defence. He claimed in 1982 to prefer playing forward, but realized that the organization needed him on defence to act as a quarterback for the team’s offence. Bob Johnson, his coach for the majority of his time in Calgary, said that Reinhart was the type of player that could be a “cornerstone” for a franchise.
