He was elected in the general election of 2010 to the position of Member of Parliament (MP) for Blackpool North and Cleveleys. On July 26, the 26th of July in 2019, Maynard has been appointed the parliamentary under- secretary of State in the Department for Transport in the Johnson Ministry.
Maynard who is a Catholic, was a Democrat who voted for the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill in 2013.
In 2014, he was featured in media coverage of the continuing high costs of the parliamentary expenses system, with his name included in a group of Conservative MPs with high claims for First Class rail travel.
In the 2015 General Election, Maynard was returned as MP for his seat, with an increased majority of 3,340. Results elsewhere left Maynard as one of only two self-identified disabled MPs.
In February of this year, Maynard told The Times about the abuse he received from Labour MPs who ridiculed his disability during an Commons debate about the demise of the Child Trust Fund on 26 October, 2010. Many Labour Party sources confirmed that this was not acceptable in the eyes of Rosie Winterton, the Labour chief whip, as well as the deputy she is Alan Campbell were reported to have spoken with MPs about the incident shortly thereafter. Within a few days of the Maynard Times report, John Bercow, the Speaker of the House of Commons, issued an official statement in writing warning MPs that this kind of abuse was not acceptable. After graduating from university, Maynard worked as an adviser to Conservative Member of Parliament Liam Fox and as a speechwriter for William Hague – the Conservative MP and leader of the Opposition. He did not win the election as the Conservative candidate for the Custom House and Silvertown ward of Newham Council on 7th December, 2000. He was fourth when he was unsuccessful for the position of Conservative candidate for the Beckton Ward in Newham Council on the 29th of March 2001. He was subsequently unable to win a seat as a councillor in the Custom House ward of Newham Council on May 2, 2002. He was unsuccessful in his bid to be his Conservative Candidate to Twickenham in the general election in 2005 which he won with 32.4 percent of the vote , and the Liberal Democrats gained 2%. In 2013, comments made by Maynard in relation to food banks and disability campaigners caused controversy after he suggested people use food banks out of habit, rather than genuine need, and that disability campaigners that were opposed to welfare reform were ‘extremists’. Following criticism from a number of charities, Maynard apologised for causing offence.
