McDermott’s initial fight as a professional was on the 26th of April, 2003. It was a bout in the Fountain Leisure Centre in Brentford beating novice Leigh Wicks. The next fight was on the 13th of June in Queensway, London stopping Gary Jones in the first round. He then fought on 30 October 2003, he beat Harry Butler in his home town of Dudley. These three wins concluded an impressive first year of professional boxing for McDermott ending the year with the record of three wins.

McDermott is now a champion. His first fight in 2006 was the first defense of the Midlands Area title beating Micheal Monaghan in the 9th Round of their match on the 16th of February. On June 29, 2006, McDermott beat Andzej Butowicz during the 3rd round of a non-title 10- rounder, and on the 26th of October 2006 he beat Hussein Osman at the Dudley Town Hall to earn his British Masters middleweight belt. In his very first bout of the year, McDermott defeated Darren Rhodes in the 5th round of an eliminator to win his full British title. In 2004 McDermott was a fighter on four additional occasions, winning every time and drawing twice. The draw took place on December 11, 2004. McDermott was fighting the undefeated Gokhan Kazaz, who was on an undercard to Ricky Hattons fight against Ray Olivera at the Excel Arena in London. Kazaz who was at the time sporting an undefeated record, 7-0. and was the first fighter to have winning records that McDermott has fought until. In 2005, and beginning the year with a record of 6-0-1, McDermott was only fighting twice knocking out his fellow journeyman Howard Clarke on 21 April and on the 6th of October defeating Andy Halder at the Town Hall in Dudley to take his Midlands Area middleweight title, defeating his opponent in the fifth round.

McDermott’s first loss came on June 20, 2008, in a shaky challenge to his British champion title, which was given to Wayne Elcock. The fight, which took place at Wolverhampton’s Civic Centre in Wolverhampton, was stopped in the second round due to McDermott suffering a cut caused by a collision of heads. The injury was determined to be to be too serious and the fight was ended, giving the victory over Elcock and a loss for the first time to McDermott. The 28th of February, 2008 McDermott did his part in compensating for the way his title contest ended with a win in the face of Steven Bendall to lift the English title. Bendall was who was a former European opponent, had smacked his first defeat on the highly regarded Paul Smith to lift the title in his previous bout. On April 24, 2009, Bendall defeated Jamie Ambler in a non fight for the title, but on May 23, 2009, he returned to title fights to fight Darren Barker for the Commonwealth belt. Barker in his third defense to the belt, suffered another loss in his career on McDermott. Dudley man by bringing him to a 4th round stoppage when the referee declared that McDermott did not beat the count after an unforced knockdown. McDermott’s final fight of the year on the 13th of November ended in a successful debut defense of the English title against the Bristol’s Danny Butler at the Fenton Manor Sports Complex in Stoke. Despite being cut, McDermott was able to win the fight with a an unanimous decision after 10 rounds. Following the fight McDermott was only defeated his opponent just by one point pledged to make the move to super middleweight, saying “getting down to 11st 6lb is now too much. It’s that extra four or five pounds which makes such a difference…This morning I felt as fit as a race horse well prepared to go the distance. But by the time I got into the ring I couldn’t find the pace or the power”.

McDermott’s wish was to be granted when for his next fight he landed a shot at the British super middleweight title against champion Paul Smith. The dream turned sour however when, in preparation for the fight, McDermott was rushed to hospital after suffering a bleed on the brain to undergo emergency brain surgery. Although making a full recovery the injury almost certainly put paid to a British title shot against Smith or even fighting again in the future. Speaking following the surgery McDermott said “obviously I’ll probably never box again and that is disappointing…with the Smith fight coming up I thought it was my chance to get into the big time…but these things happen for a reason and I feel very lucky”.
