He started his formal education on biology in York University in Toronto and completed his PhD in the same year at Dalhousie University with Evelyn C. Pielou. He taught biology for the past 30 years, starting with the University of Guelph (1978-1982) and then at in the University of Ottawa (1982-1999) and finally, the Edward G. Schlieder Endowed Chair in Environmental Studies at Southeastern Louisiana University (1999 until 2007). He has published more than 150 academic articles and seven books in addition to editing two publications. He was designated as a Highly Cited Researchers from the Institute for Scientific Information. He was awarded the National Wetlands Award for Science Research in 2007 from the Environmental Law Institute. While he’s worked on diverse plants and an extensive variety of ecological problems however, his primary research has been on the fundamentals that govern communities of plants, with an especially strong focus on the wetlands.
Synthesis is among Paul Keddy’s greatest contributions to the wetland ecology as well as the ecology of plants. The first of his books, Competition, won both the George Lawson Medal of the Canadian Botanical Association and the Henry Allan Gleason Award of the New York Botanical Garden. A sequel edition of Competition was released in 2001.
In addition to scientific writing, Keddy has prepared guides to the natural history of two regions of North America. For the State of Louisiana he authored Water, Earth, Fire: Louisiana’s Natural Heritage. For Lanark County, Ontario, he wrote Earth, Water, Fire: An Ecological Profile of Lanark County. For this contribution Keddy was given a Champion of Nature Award (2008) by the Mississippi Valley Field Naturalists and the Lanark County Award of Excellence—Heritage and Ecology by the county (2009).
