Eric Higgs was born in Brantford, Ontario, to David P.J. Higgs as well as Barbara Isabel Stowe. The time he was in pre-school was North Delta, British Columbia (near Vancouver). He went to an elementary school for children located in Thornhill, Ontario (near Toronto) as well as Secondary school (Brantford Collegiate School and Pauline Johnston Secondary School) in Brantford. In 1976, he decided to turn away from what was an early fascination with engineering and physics. His first post was in his Department of Environment and Resource Studies at the University Waterloo (1987-88). He relocated into New York City in 1988 to continue his research in the philosophy of technology at the Philosophy and Technology Studies Center located at the Polytechnic University of New York. Higgs was a professor the course at Oberlin College as a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Environmental Studies Program in 1989-90 and then took an appointment in the tenure-stream of the brand-new Science, Technology and Society Program at the University of Alberta. The end of the program led to an official appointment to the Department of Philosophy (1990-92) followed by a joint appointment with both the departments of Anthropology and Sociology. He was given tenure and was promoted into Associate Professor at the age of 1995. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2002. was appointed the Director (2002-2010) as well as Associate Professor at the School of Environmental Studies at the University of Victoria, and elevated to Full Professor in 2005.

In 2000 he co-edited (with Andrew Light and David Strong) a volume of essays discussing the work of Albert Borgmann which was described by Paul Durbin as one of the first volumes that explicitly strives to establish the philosophy of technology as an academic subdiscipline with canonical texts [1].
