Paul Michael Gaustad (born February 3 1982, in Fargo, North Dakota and born in Portland, Oregon) is an American former professional center for ice hockey who participated in the Nashville Predators and Buffalo Sabres of the National Hockey League (NHL). He is known as “Goose.”
On the 7th of February 2007, during a match against Ottawa Senators, in a game against Ottawa Senators, Gaustad’s leg was cut and his tendon broken in a collision Dany Heatley. It was a traumatic injury that at the time was believed to be the end of his season. The injury was later discovered that the injury could have possibly ended his career should it have been one inch larger. But, he recovered earlier than expected and was able to join his team the Sabres during their 2007 Stanley Cup playoffs on May 4, 2007 for game 5 against New York Rangers at home in Buffalo.
At the 2012 NHL trade deadline, on February 27, Gaustad and a 2013 fourth- round draft pick were sent to the Nashville Predators in exchange for a 2012 first-round pick.
On September 8, 2016, Gaustad announced his retirement from the NHL after 12 seasons via his Instagram account.
The 2005-06 campaign was the first time Gaustad gained a place as an active player with the Sabres which he played mostly as a center of the fourth line and also played the power forward/enforcer position, alongside teammates Adam Mair and Andrew Peters. Gaustad was wearing his number in Rochester however, was forced to increase numbers to 28, in Buffalo because 14 was removed in honour of Sabres legend Rene Robert.

prior to his move to Portland between 1999 and 2000, Gaustad had been an active Portland Jr. Hawk. After that, Gaustad started playing for a Tier II team in Burnaby, British Columbia, of the British Columbia Junior Hockey League (BCJHL). Through his three seasons playing for the Winter Hawks, he registered 135 points (53 goals and an additional 82 assists) before making his professional debut with the Sabres’ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate named known as the Rochester Americans, in 2002-03.
Gaustad was selected 7th in the round 220th overall to the Buffalo Sabres in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. The off season, he resides at Portland, Oregon. He was also a player with his team, the Portland Winter Hawks of the Western Hockey League (WHL).
After a productive campaign during the 2007–08 season, in which he registered a solid 36 points while mainly on the third and fourth lines, Gaustad was re- signed by the Sabres to a four-year, $9.2 million contract extension on the eve of the free agency period, which was set for July 1, 2008.
