He was a freestyle swimming swimmer and was a member of the Warrender Baths Club in Edinburgh. He also competed for City of Swansea swimming club as well as Arizona State University while studying there. He participated in the Summer Olympics for Great Britain at the 1984 (Los Angeles, California). In 1984, he won silver in the freestyle 4×200 m relay, with Neil Cochran, Andrew Astbury and Paul Howe.
