In September 2012 Deighton was appointed by Prime Minister David Cameron as junior minister in HM Government as Commercial Secretary to the Treasury, with effect from January 2013. The announcement stated that he would lead on infrastructure and economic delivery, with responsibility for implementing the Government’s National Infrastructure Plan and supporting the Culture Secretary with the 2012 Olympics legacy. The delay in his taking up the appointment was necessary to allow him to complete his duties at LOCOG.

Deighton was appointed Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the 2013 New Years Honours for services to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Deighton was named the CEO of LOCOG following an application to the publication The Economist. The announcement of his appointment came on December 19, 2005. Deighton was a fan of sports has said the job would be “the only job I would have considered leaving Goldman Sachs for”. Deighton has been acknowledged as helping to make the London Olympics. His strategy included a lot of preparatory analysis and knowledge, early success in securing sponsorships, and an extensive level of staff training.

Paul Clive Deighton, Baron Deighton, KBE (born 18 January 1956) is a British Conservative politician who served as the Commercial Secretary of HM Treasury from January 2013 until May 2015. Deighton is an investment banker, who also was Director of Operations for the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) which is the body that is responsible for the planning of for the 2012 Summer Olympics and Paralympics.

Deighton started his career at Bank of America and moved into Security Pacific National Bank, where he was a specialist on corporate banking. After 1983, Deighton joined the investment banking institution Goldman Sachs, initially based in London. He worked for two years in the New York office from 1994 in which he was the Head of Controllers in the joint position. In 1996, he moved back to London and was promoted to the post of Head of European Operations and became a partner of the company. In 2000, he was promoted to chief operating officer for Europe.

To make him accountable to Parliament, he was created a life peer on 1 November 2012 as Baron Deighton, of Carshalton in the County of Surrey, and introduced in the House of Lords the same day.
