Patrizia Panico (Italian pronunciation: [pa’trittsja pa’ni’koborn 8 February 1975) is an Italian former professional footballer and is currently the director for Italy U16. A prolific goal scorer, Panico is a longstanding player for the Italy women’s national team. She has earned more than 185 caps for Italy as well as been her national team’s captain. She was a participant in Italy’s 2001, 1997 2005, 2009, and 2013, and UEFA Women’s Championship campaigns and participated in the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup. In a professional career that spans more than twenty years Panico was awarded ten Scudetti and picked up five Coppa Italia winner’s medals with the various clubs she played for. She has been Serie-A’s highest scorer on 14 occasions (an Italian record for her category) and also spent a portion time in America playing for WPS Women’s Pro Soccer (WPS) team Sky Blue FC. Panico is known as “The Scorpion” due to her incredible goalscoring abilities.
In 1999, during the FIFA Women’s World Cup in the United States, Panico gave Italy the lead in their first match against Germany. The game at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California was a draw. In the end, the Italians were eliminated following losing 2-0 to Brazil in their following game but they were able to come back and beat Mexico by 2-0. Panico scored the game’s first goal, and was described as “one of the world’s most explosive players” by CNN Sports Illustrated.
Four years later, Panico was included in the squad for UEFA Women’s Euro 2005 in North West England. She played in the Italians’ 4–0 defeat to perennial champions Germany, which intersected defeats to France and Norway and preceded another first round exit.
At UEFA Women’s Euro 2009 in Finland, Panico played in all four games and added two goals as the Italians went out to Germany in the quarter-finals. Four years later, national coach Antonio Cabrini named Panico in his selection for UEFA Women’s Euro 2013 in Sweden. At 38, Panico entered her fifth European finals and admitted it was likely to be her last. She was left disappointed by another defeat by the Germans in the quarter-final at Myresjöhus Arena, Växjö.
On the 11th of November 1999, Panico scored a memorable hat-trick against Germany during a 4-4 UEFA Women’s Championship qualification draw. In the final event Panico was named the player of the match. Panico scored two goals in Italy’s first win of 2-1 against Denmark in the Waldstadion in Aalen. The Italians were unable to make it in the group following an 1-1 draw against Norway as well as a 2:0 loss by France.

Panico made her international debut for the senior team on the 8th of April, 1996 in Italy’s 4-1 UEFA Women’s Championship qualification win against Portugal at Mestre. Panico started the game and scored Italy’s first goal within five minutes of playing. Panico was chosen for the final match in Norway. She scored in the draw for the group stage, which was 2-2 together with Denmark in the group stage, and Italy made it to the final, where they lost by 2-0 to Germany.
At Modena in 1997 and 1998, Panico was the first team to win the first time she won a Serie A title. She was a teammate of Carolina Morace and came to be considered the successor to Morace’s title of Italy’s top female athlete.
In the months before the professional Women’s United Soccer Association (WUSA) began play in 2001, Panico was pursued by Philadelphia Charge. She had agreed terms but the move was eventually derailed by red tape.
