Patrizia Nanz (born 9 July 1965 in Stuttgart, Germany) is a political scientist as well as an expert on democratic innovation and public participation. She is an associate professor of transformational environmental studies in the University of Potsdam, and one of the three scientific directors of the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS). As of March 1, 2018, she was elected the institute’s managing director of the scientific department. She is co-chairperson of “Science Platform Sustainability 2030” An inter-disciplinary platform that promotes discussions and research to help the realization of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in Germany. She was a professor in the field of politics at the University of Bremen since 2002. Patrizia Nanz was the director of the research field “Culture of Participation” at the Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities (KWI) in Essen between 2013 and the year 2016. She was the founder of the European Institute for Public Participation (EIPP) and was an Executive Committee of the Participedia Wiki which is a database of democratic developments across the world since 2009. She is a member of Scientific Committee of the World Forum for Democracy held annually by the Council of Europe. Nanz has provided expert opinion to companies, state agencies and the governments of various European countries.
In 2002, following a stint as an associate researcher for the Max Planck Institute for Research on Collective Goods in Bonn as well as having completed a post-doctoral research appointment with the Centre for the Study of Democracy, University of Westminster (London) conducting research on the topic of “Democracy, Deliberation and Learning at the Transnational Level: Risk Regulation in the European Union and the World Trade Organisation”, Nanz was appointed to an associate professorship in the University of Bremen with a specialization in political theory. She was an invited scholar in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Cambridge, Mass.) in 2003. She was also an associate in the Wissenschaftskolleg, Berlin Institute for Advanced Study during 2005-2006.
Patrizia Nanz’s main areas of research are the European political project, the democratic innovation and development, public participation, and technology assessment (climate change, biotechnology, energy transition, long term storage solutions for radioactive waste).
In 2020 the book “Reconstructing Democracy” (Havard University Press) was published, in which Patrizia Nanz, together with Charles Taylor and Madeleine Beaubien Taylor, uses local examples to describe how democracies in transformations can be revitalized by involving citizenship.
From 2002 until 2010, Nanz was the executive and coordinator in the study “Participation and Legitimation of International Organisations” at the Collaborative Research Center Staatlichkeit im Wandel (Transformations of the State) located at the University of Bremen (from 2006 alongside Jens Steffek). From 2005 to 2009 Nanz directed the German research efforts in the research project “Giving New Subjects a Voice: Migrants, Organizations and Integration into the Health Care System”. The project was funded through the Volkswagen Foundation, the project was designed to create innovative strategies to enhance the policy processes and the institutional framework of the health systems more responsive to demands of people who are migrants. Nanz is the executive coordinator in the study project Fundamental Rights in the European Union between 2007 and 2010. The project was supported through the European Union and carried out within the context of European research networks Resources, Rights and Capabilities In Search of Social Foundations for Europe (CAPRIGHT).

The recipient of a scholarship given to talented individuals from the Bavarian State Ministry of Education, Science and the Arts, Patrizia Nanz studied philosophy at the Munich School of Philosophy and literary criticism and history in addition to philosophy at the universities of Munich, Milan and Frankfurt Rhine-Main between 1984 until 1990. In the same time, she studied journalism through the IfP Catholic Media School in Munich and was a part-time intern with different newspaper publications (including an internship at The Arts & Culture section of the Frankfurter Allgemeinen Zeitung). Her dissertation focused on philosophy and language. overseen by Jurgen Habermas.
Since 1991, Nanz was employed for a few seasons as an editor of non-fiction and science publication with German publisher S. Fischer Verlag and Milan- based publishers Feltrinelli. After a break in McGill University, where she took part in lectures given by Charles Taylor, Nanz commenced her doctoral studies in political sciences in the European University Institute in Florence in 1997. She graduated by submitting a thesis in 2006, which focused on the European public area (examiners: Philippe C. Schmitter, Jurgen Habermas, Charles Sabel, Peter Wagner).
In 2009 Patrizia Nanz co-founded the participedia wiki – a global database for democratic innovations. She is a member of the platform’s executive committee. From 2011 to 2013 Nanz contributed to the research project “Participedia: Strengthening an emerging global partnership”, which was supported by the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada. Together with Klaus Töpfer (IASS) and Claus Leggewie (KWI), she was the co-leader of the research project DEMOENERGY (Transformation of the Energy System as the Engine for Democratic Innovations), which was funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The project studied the development, implementation, and evaluation of dialogue-based processes for citizen participation as solutions for conflict resolution and de-escalation in connection with energy infrastructure projects.
