As a professional footballer, Lair was a player in lower classes of France. After a period of time playing in Stade Briochin and US Avranches In 1987, he made the move into FC Perigueux where he had his first coaching experience in charge of the junior team and playing for the team’s first. The same role was re-enforced at US Saint-Malo before making his debut as a coach in USA Pouance at the age of 23 in. He then was a coach and player for Racing Doue, AC Pouzauges, Trelissac FC, ESA Briviste and Reims as a coach for players or trainer for junior teams until his retirement in 2001.

After his retirement, he was appointed as the assistant coach at Stade de Reims, which was elevated from 2002 into Ligue 2 after a decade in lower divisions. When the first manager Marc Collat was sacked in 2003, he was offered the job, but he turned down the opportunity and was transferred towards AS Angouleme as an assistant coach. The year 2004 was the time he took his first job as first coach at CS Villeneuve, and in 2005, he was the first woman to coach in soccer and was appointed coach of the current champion Montpellier HSC. Under his two-year tenure, Montpellier took home two national titles and reached in the European Cup semifinals and was the runner-up in the championship in the standings behind FCF Juvisy and Olympique Lyonnais. Lair then returned to the game of male amateur footballand coached Castelnau-le- Cres FC for two seasons. Then, in the year 2009, he relocated to Benin to become the coach of Espoir Savalou and then resigned from the team after just a month. He also served as a coach for in the Rwanda Under-17 National Team and also served as the team’s senior assistant coach in the year following.

On 4 June 2019, he was announced manager of newly relegated Ligue 2 club Guingamp for the 2019/20 season. After a poor start which saw the club in 14th place with nine points, he was sacked on 23 September 2019.
