Ruel was a member of his fellow Trojans during February of 2005. Carroll attracted Ruel off his NFL team, the New York Giants, taking Ruel out for lunch during a warm morning at Manhattan Beach. Ruel was able to find Carroll as charming and commented “Pete’s like a beautiful woman. He was a guard at offensive line for the University of Miami under head coach Fran Curci. He graduated with a B.S. on psychology at the age of 72. the next day he became an assistant coach for the graduate program in 1973. He along with Seattle Seahawks Head Coach Pete Carroll were both graduate assistants for the 1997 Arkansas Razorbacks football team. A former Mississippi Director of Coaching Houston Nutt was also at Arkansas at the same time as an assistant quarterback. Arkansas’ defensive coordinator was at that time Monte Kiffin, would serve as a mentor to Carroll who would later hire his own son Lane Kiffin as his offensive coordinator at USC. The Razorbacks were victorious in their 1978 Orange Bowl that season and Ruel would go into a full-time job in Washington State University. He stayed for four seasons playing for the Cougars in the initial two seasons as an offensive line coach. He then added the position of offensive coordinator in the last two years.

Ruel’s most extensive time at Kansas between 1988 and 1996. He was beginning with three years as offensive coordinator, and the offensive line coach, later the addition of assistant coach title in the last six years. In his first summer in Lawrence was a part of the coaches and the 50 or so students on the field of practice for unity. While at Kansas the Jayhawks increased their score between 1-10 and 10-2 in the year 1988, to 10-2 in 1995. They finished within the top 10.
