Kearns began his career with PermaPress Studio in 2007. Since then his credits for production and recording include Lovvers’ OCD Go Go Go Girls and Pat MacDonald’s Troubador Stomp Sons of Huns’ Banishment Ritual Jerry Joseph’s introduction to Lovely; and Walter Salas-Humara’s Curve and Shake. Kearns is also the resident engineer of Jackpot Recording in Portland, Oregon and is a contributor to the influential trade publication Tape Op.

He is well-known for his role as a singer/songwriter for the Portland the band from Oregon, Blue Skies for Black Hearts and also for his engineering and production work for a variety of artists such as The Exploding Hearts, Lovvers, Pat MacDonald, Sons of Huns Walter Salas-Humara, and Jerry Joseph. Kearns began his career as an engineer on recordings in 1995 following his time as DJ in KCMU at Seattle. He established the first of his studios, Studio 13, in 1997. He also composed as well as recorded The Exploding Hearts’ Guitar Romantic that signaled the return of pop-punk in the ’70s. It was released in April of 2003, by Dirtnap Records, the first large-scale pressing of 1000 vinyl LPs sold out within two days. The critic Matt LeMay, writing in Pitchfork The magazine, praised the album for being “simply an awesome power- pop record.” Maximum Rock and Roll called Guitar Romantic “the best album over the last five years in its issue of April 2003 The album was awarded 4.5 stars on All Music. Shortly after the release of Guitar Romantic, band members Adam Cox, Matt Fitzgerald along with Jeremy Gage were killed in an automobile accident, following which the group was disbanded. Guitar Romantic went on to sell 3000 copies.

Alongside his productions, Kearns is also a musician, songwriter and recording musician. Since 2000, he’s been a songwriter, lead vocalist and guitarist for Blue Skies for Black Hearts the power-pop group which he founded as a recording studio outlet for his music compositions. Blue Skies has had a group of musicians that rotates, including Kearns having been the one one to be featured on every recording. Blue Skies has recorded six studio albums up to now which includes Embracing the New Age. Portland Mercury said “virtually every track is a reminiscence of a song from the past and all the pop pieces snapping perfectly-crafted arrangements and just the right amount of risqué …” Blue Skies for Black Hearts recorded a Daytrotter session in the year 2012.

Kearns scored the music for the documentary “It’s a Ring Thing: The Portland Horse Project,” which tells the story of conceptual artist Scott Wayne Indiana’s Horse Project. His compositions, recorded by Blue Skies for Black Hearts, have been featured on The Today Show, the feature film Love Hurts starring Janeane Garofalo, the HBO series Eastbound & Down, The X Factor and in promotional installations for Nike, Adidas and Abercrombie & Fitch.
