He was born in Brantford, Ontario, Hickey was selected as the 30th player overall of the New York Rangers in the 1973 NHL Amateur Draft. The nickname was “Hitch”, Hickey was selected 18th overall during the year 1973 WHA Amateur Draft of The Toronto Toros, for whom Hickey was drafted in his debut professional season with the World Hockey Association (WHA). After joining the Rangers in the season 1975-76 NHL year, Hickey went on to play in 646 of his career NHL games which saw him score scores of 192 goals as well as 212 assists to earn the score of 404 points. He was a popular player while playing for Rangers Rangers, Hickey was selected to be part of the same line as Swedish players Anders Hedberg and Ulf Nilsson following the Rangers bought them from Winnipeg Jets of the WHA. Hickey started his financial service profession as an account manager at Wall Street with the New York City investment banking company which was owned by Drexel Burnham Lambert upon retirement from the National Hockey League in 1985. The year 1988 saw him was named director general of the Los Angeles Kings’ American Hockey League (AHL) development program in New Haven, Connecticut and was later named “Executive of the Year” distinction in 1992. This award was based on his management of an independent franchise and initiation/completion of the AHL expansion plan. For the past six months, Hickey was active at the level of ownership and was also a member of the AHL on the Finance Marketing, Finance and NHL Liaison and Development committees as an AHL League Governor.

In the 2009 book 100 Ranger Greats, the authors ranked Hickey at No. 78 all- time of the 901 New York Rangers who had played during the team’s first 82 seasons.
