An architect who was a former student, Alary created Ensemble in 1998 as a persona musical that would explore the relationship between music and disjointed pop. Alary moved to London to pursue a degree in music, and released his debut album Sketch Proposals under his name Ensemble in collaboration with Rephlex Records.
Alary’s second album called the self-titled Ensemble includes a symphonic wall of sound along with intimate, folky pop vocals it was released in the year 2006. The album features vocals from Chan Marshall (of Cat Power fame), Lou Barlow and Mileece, drums played performed by Adam Pierce; and orchestral arrangements composed by Johannes Malfatti, performed by Germany’s Babelsberg Film Orchestra.
Sketch Proposals caught the attention of Björk, and Alary’s remixes of three of her songs – “Sun in My Mouth”, “Cocoon” and “Mouth’s Cradle” – were released as B-sides. He went on to co-write the song “Desired Constellation” with Björk on her 2004 album Medúlla.
