He was the son of Valeri Znarok was an experienced soccer (soccer) player in the early days, and went on to be a successful coach. The young Oleg had been introduced to the sport of hockey through his grandfather, who brought his younger brother and him to an ice rink in the neighborhood.
From 1983 to 1991, the player was part of Dinamo Riga, where he was a top player, and a club legend. The 1984-85 season saw Znarok’s breakthrough with 27 points over 52 games. He scored 13 goals and 14 assists, despite having just 3 assists in his 30 games in during the prior season. In the 1987-88 season the team was led by Znarok to a second-place finish the playoffs of the Soviet Championship League which they lost 3-1 against CSKA Moscow in the final. In 1990 and 1991, it was his best individual campaign, scoring 51 points over 44 games, scoring 24 goalsand 27 assists. In all, he’d score 221 points in 361 games played playing in the Soviet league. He scored 100 goals, and accommodating 120 assist.
In 1990, he was called up to the Soviet Union national team for the Japan Cup, where he put up 8 points (4 goals, 4 assists) over 4 games.
As he was a Dinamo Riga player, he was also a part of the larger Dynamo sports society. This allowed him in 1990 to be loaned to Dynamo Moscow’s squad for their Super Series tour of North America. Oleg Valerievich Znarok (Russian: Oleg Valer’evich Znarok , Latvian: Olegs Znaroks; born 2 January 1963) is a Soviet-Latvian-German professional ice hockey player and coach who represented the USSR and Latvia, internationally, and currently represents Russia.
Znarok began his hockey career on ice in Traktor Chelyabinsk, making his debut during the season 1979-1980. In the following years, Znarok would occasionally play for the team’s top players, and then take part in 18 games during his 1981-82 campaign. While he was not as productive in the senior ranks as a teen His first goal in his professional career came against legendary Soviet goalie Vladislav Tretiak.
The 1989 Super Series, in which Soviet clubs faced National Hockey League (NHL) clubs, Dinamo Riga was one of two Soviet representatives. Znarok would play in 3 games scoring 1 goal.

Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, Znarok would go on to represent Latvia in international competition. He would play in 5 IIHF World Championships and help promote Latvia to the top division of international competition in 1996. In 1997, he helped Latvia to its best ever placing of seventh in the world. In total he would go on to put up 35 points in 34 games, scoring 18 goals.
