Ole Mortensen is one of the most popular and richest Cricketer who was born on January 29, 1958 in Vejle, Region of Southern Denmark, Denmark. Mortensen was nicknamed “Stan” while playing for Derbyshire which is a reference on the famous England footballer from those years, Stan Mortensen. He also earned the nickname “Eric Bloodaxe” for his ability to swear in Danish. This cricket-playing Viking was sketched on the set of 1994’s Pete Sellman.

He was only 25 when he moved into England for a cricket match in the year 1983. He quickly landed himself in the Derbyshire team and took the wicket of 66 at 24.31. Wisden in the same year said he was “accurate, hostile and, above all, a bowler of unquenchable spirit”. This was his best season and also contained his highest match and innings figures. In his seventh game of first- class, He took 6 for 27, five for 62 in helping Derbyshire defeat Yorkshire in 22-runs in Sheffield. In 1988, a knee injury limited his playing to just 12 games, however, he set the first-class bowling average of the country with 34 wickets and 13.64. He was especially efficient when playing one-day cricket and in 1990 when Derbyshire took the title in the refuge Assurance League 40-over tournament and he won the title of the most efficient bowler in the entire tournament. In 1985, his first contract with Derbyshire ended. Carlsberg the Danish brewery tried to contract him on behalf of Northamptonshire (where they have their UK headquarters) and offer to double the wages of their countryman. “Stan”, as his teammates knew him, decided to remain at Derby due to the fact that it was because he “felt that we were going places under Kim Barnett’s leadership and sincerely believed we were going to win some trophies”.

He was a genuine tail-ender. The only time he exceeded 40 he made 74 not out against Yorkshire at Chesterfield in 1987, putting on 151 for the ninth wicket with Reg Sharma (who made his only first-class century).

Mortensen was a player with Ellerslie Cricket Club located in Auckland, New Zealand in the 1983/84 New Zealand season, helping Ellerslie win an all-club one-day tournament held at Eden Park. In 1985 to 1984, during the English off- season Mortensen was a player in the off-season for Brighton Cricket Club in Melbourne, Australia, taking 401 wickets between the hours of 13.00 and 13.00.
