Nada M.Shabout, born 8 January 1962 in Glasgow, Scotland, is an American art historian who specializes in modern Iraqi art. Since 2002, she has been an assistant professor of art history at The University of North Texas. She is co-founding member and president of the Association for Modern and Contemporary Art of the Arab World and Iran (AMCA).

She is curator of two traveling exhibitions, “Dafatir Contemporary Iraqi Book Art” (2005-07) and “Moments from 20th Century Iraqi Art” (Montalvo Art Center in California, 2007-2008). She edited the 2007 exhibition catalog “Dafatir Contemporary Iraqi Book Art” (UNT Art Gallery).

She is a co-founder and president of the Association of Modern and Contemporary Art from the Arab World, Iran and Turkey (AMCA). AMCA was founded in 2007 as a private, non-profit, international organization as an affiliate organization of the Middle East Studies Association of North America (MESA). AMCA mission statement claims, aims to advance the study of contemporary Middle Eastern art studies, through the creation of a network of interested scholars and organizations, facilitating communication and cooperation by sponsoring conferences, holding meetings, and exchanging information via a newsletter and a website.

Shabout studied architecture at the New York Institute of Technology and at the University of Texas at Arlington. She teaches Arab visual culture as well as Islamic art. Since her June 2003 visit to Baghdad, she has been documenting modern Iraqi heritage. She is particularly interested in the collection that was previously kept at the Iraqi Museum of Modern Art. She has organized panels and presented around the globe on the current state of Iraq’s modern history after 2003, the relationship between identity and visual representations within modern and contemporary Iraqi art, as well as exhibitions of Middle Eastern art in the West since 911.

Among her honors is The American Academic Research Institute in Iraq (TAARII) fellowship 2006 and 2007; and Fulbright Senior Scholar Program, 2007 Lecture/Research fellowship to Jordan Project, “Arab Art Now: A Study of the Contemporary Art Vision in Jordan.”
