Alkan is a native of Kiziltepe within the Mardin province in Turkey. He was one of six brothers. Alkan was a part of the Fenerbahce football academy in Mardin when he was just 12 years old, in the dark about his father. His father, also from Mardin but did not support Alkan becoming a professional footballer. Instead, he advised Alkan to concentrate on school as the boy was already a successful student. The brothers of Alkan were also football players who played within TFF’s TFF Third League. Alkan was chosen for the team and had to pay the payment of 60 TL every month to keep his place. Then, he told that his dad for the first time his participation in a football school, merely saying that it was his choice to join the team. When the topic of payment was raised during the conversation Alkan’s father stated that it was impossible to afford the fee of 60 TL each month. In reality, Alkan was held in regards to this school. He was also able arrange an all-in payment of 60TL to keep learning and playing within the academy. The father of Alkan was angry initially, due to Alkan signing up for the school with no knowledge however, he has been supportive of his son’s soccer career ever from the time he joined. Alkan was transferred from Kiziltepe Egitim Genclik ve Spor Kulubu in February 2006 after which he transferred to Mardinspor at a cost that was 10,000 Turkish Lira in the month of September which earned him an invite to the Turkey U-15 squad in 2007. In 2007 Alkan moved from Fenerbahce to Super Lig club Fenerbahce. He began his career with his B Genc team (14-16 year aged players). The following season Alkan was promoted into his own Super Genc team (16-18) in which he played 22 appearances for the DGSL (Deplasmanli Super Gencler Lig). Alkan became a member of the team A2 (U-20) in the middle of the 2009-10 campaign, having played 17 times. Alkan was the right-back in the first team in the Fenerbahce A2 team that took part in the Milk Cup, losing to Manchester United F.C. 1-1 during the semifinals. Alkan was dismissed in the first quarter-final after playing the ball in the penalty area. Alkan also started training alongside the senior team in the same period. A few days later, following the training session, Alkan was pulled aside by Roberto Carlos, who praised the young talent, however, he also highlighted the weaknesses that he needed to address. The Brazilian legend has compared Alkan with Cafu, his previous Brazil teammates, Cafu. Gokhan Gonul has also been able to coach Alkan. Alkan stated during an interview on TFF.org that Alkan and Gonul have a meeting after practice and discuss the things Alkan should work on to enhance his performance. Many players were not eligible for selection, whether through suspension or injury, for the match with Bursaspor in February of 2010, leading manager Christoph Daum to include Alkan, Gokay Iravul, and Furkan Aydin in the match squad. This was the first time that Alkan was part of the match team.
In April 2007, Alkan was called up to the Turkey U-15 squad for two friendlies against the Netherlands U-15s. Alkan came on as a sub in the first match, and then played the entirety of the second match. A year later, Alkan was called up to the U-16 squad, making one appearance for the squad. In September 2008, Alkan was called up to the Turkey U-17 team. In a match against the Malta U-17s, Alkan came on as a substitute in the 41st minute and contributed two assists. Alkan cites this performance as one of the turning points in his career. He participated in 13 matches (including substitutions) and scored one goal. Alkan was the starting right back for the Turkey squad at the 2009 FIFA U-17 World Cup. They were knocked out by Colombia in the quarter-finals after a 1–1 draw (Colombia won 5–3 on penalties). Alkan was also selected for the U-18 squad five times in 2009, but was not capped. Alkan was promoted to the U-19 team in 2010. Alkan was the starting right back for the U-19 team that finished second in Group 4 of the 2010 UEFA European Under-19 Football Championship elite qualification behind Spain. He made his debut for the U-21 team on 5 September 2012 in a friendly match against Italy.
