Thompson was born in the segregated Anderson, South Carolina, and was raised within Greenville, South Carolina. She was a student at Scarsdale High School in Scarsdale, New York, under the direction of the Student Transfer and Exchange Program (STEP) which she graduated from in 1969. Thompson then moved from Rhode Island to attend Pembroke College which was the women’s college that served as the coordination in the context of Brown University. Thompson obtained the Artium Baccalaureus degree from Brown University in 1973, and also an Juris Doctor in 1976 from Boston University School of Law in 1976. In 1974, Thompson began working as an intern in the field of law at Rhode Island Legal Services and was then hired in 1976 to be senior staff attorney and family law manager up to 1979. From 1979 until 1980, she was an associate for the firm that represents McKinnon and Fortunato. In the year 1980, Thompson became the Assistant City Solicitor in Providence, Rhode Island, and served until 1982. In the year 1980, Thompson was a solo practitioner until 1984 , when she founded a law firm located in South Providence while raising a family with her husband, Rhode Island District Court judge William Clifton. The year 1988 was the first time Thompson got appointed to the Rhode Island District Court by Governor Edward D. DiPrete. Then, in 1997 she was promoted into the Rhode Island Superior Court by Governor Lincoln Almond.
