Miguel Filipe Machado de Albuquerque, a Portuguese politician of Social Democratic Party (PSD), is the current President of Regional Government of Madeira. He was born on 4 May 1961. He was elected leader of the PSD Madeira on January 10, 2015. He was the former mayor (presidente da Camara, in Portuguese) of Funchal. Albuquerque enjoys gardening and has a Duchess of Braganza Rose Garden.
The centre-right party PSD, Albuquerque’s regional election winner on 29 March 2015, retained power with an overall majority of 44.4% votes and 24 seats in regional parliament. This was the 11th consecutive time that the PSD won Madeira’s absolute majority.
The election in which PSD’s former leader, president of the region, Alberto Joao Jardim, did not appear on the ballot was the first. He stated that he would resign as president and leader in PSD-Madeira in 2015. Albuquerque was elected president and leader of PSD–Madeira on 29 December 2014. However, he said that he would not assume the presidency of the Autonomous Region of Madeira automatically without holding elections. The law states that once parliament has been dissolved, the president must go to Lisbon to attend a meeting of Portugal’s Council of State to explain why it was dissolved. At the time, Alberto Joao Jardim, the president, was asked to attend. He then asked Cavaco Silva (President of Portugal) to call an election for Madeira on the 29th March 2015.

He signed an agreement for the twinning between the cities of Funchal, Gibraltar and Gibraltar by Solomon Levy (the then mayor of Gibraltar), on 13 May 2009.
