Octavian Zidaru is one of the most popular and richest Fencer who was born on October 17, 1953 in Bucharest, Romania. Octavian Zidaru (born 17 October 1953) is a Romanian fencing coach and fencer.
In the wake of Dan Podeanu’s resignation after his resignation following the London 2012 Summer Olympics He was appointed the coach of a changed Romanian women’s epee squad: Loredana Dinu, Anca Maroiu and Simona Gherman all retired from sports and the only player Ana Maria Branza remained from the team that was twice world champions. Zidaru recruited Simona Pop, and Maria Udrea as regular team members, along with Raluca Sbircia, and Amalia Tataran on reserve. Zidaru was the team’s leader in winning an Olympic silver medal at the 2013 European Fencing Championships in Zagreb and an bronze medal at the 2013 World Fencing Championships in Budapest. In August 2013, he won his first Romanian senior championships in the over 60 age group.
As of 2016, Zidaru is national coach to the Hong Kong women’s épée team. Under his guidance, Vivian Kong qualified to the 2016 Summer Olympics.
After the retirement of a fencer he was an instructor for CSA Steaua and trained amongst other fencers Cornel Milan, as well as his 1986 silver world medallist Miklos Bodoczi. He is currently an internationally-renowned coach with the International Fencing Federation, member of the executive committee of the European Fencing Confederation and technical director of the Romanian Fencing Federation. He actively participates in the evolution of fencing in the world, offering workshops in Jordania in the years 2004 and 2008 and overseeing the Dakar International school for masters of fencing from 2005 until the year 2008. He also organized in 2012 the first fencing coaching class specifically geared towards women.

Zidaru began fencing in the year 1967 in his school’s club for sports, CSS Triumf, and later joined CSA Steaua Bucuresti. He started his study of Economics at the Bucharest Academy of Economic Studies. He has an Ph.D on sports sciences from the Faculty of Physical Education and Sports of the University of Bucharest.
As a player He became the champion of the national team in Romania in 1975. He was vice-champion of the country in 1978, 1980 and 1982. He also took home 11 gold medals in the championship of the team for Steaua as well as in the Cupa Romaniei in 1982. He was a participant during the 1980 Summer Olympics at Moscow. He was ranked 26th in the epee individual event, but made it to the semi-finals of the event of teams for Romania together with Ioan Popa Anton Pongratz, Costica Baragan along with Petru Kuki. The team was ultimately eliminated by Russia and did not make it to the podium. In 1977, he was awarded his title as master of sport (Maestru al Sportului) and in 1982, the title of master of sports emeritus (Maestru Emerit al Sportului).
The 2013–14 season saw Simona Gherman’s return to competition. She was drafted back into the team immediately and won a bronze medal at the European Championships in Strasbourg, Romania earning a sixth European title in the team event. The World Championships proved however very disappointing as no Romanian fencer got past the round of 16 and Romania lost in the quarter- finals, finishing 5th in the team event. Following this failure, Zidaru was replaced by Dan Podeanu.
