Norio Sasaki (Zuo “Mu Ze Fu Sasaki Norio born on May 24, 1958) is an ex- Japanese soccer player and manager. He was the director of coaching for the Japan women’s national team. He was the head coach for the Japan U-20 women’s team from 2007 and was appointed coach of the national team in the year 2008. He was the coach of the team at 2011, the FIFA Women’s World Cup, which they beat their opponents from the United States on penalty kicks to take home their first FIFA Women’s World Cup. He was fired as the head coach in March of 2016.
Under Sasaki’s leadership, Nadeshiko won the EAFF Women’s Football Championship in the year 2008, and then again in the year 2010. He also guided his team of Japan Women to a fourth-place finishing in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.
Sasaki and his team won the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup, which upset host nation Germany and then Sweden to reach the tournament final, and beat the United States 3-1 in a penalty shoot-out in the final. Nadeshiko became the 19th recipient of Japan’s People’s Honour Award for winning the World Cup. On 9 January 2012, Sasaki was awarded the Women’s Best Coach Award in the 2011 FIFA Ballon d’Or.
At the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada, Sasaki, who attempted to become only the 2nd coach since Vittorio Pozzo’s Italian team 77 years ago to win two FIFA World Cup finals, oversaw a 2nd-place effort, as the Japanese lost 5-2 to the USA in the final.
Since 2006 Sasaki took over as the assistant coach of the Japan women’s national team. He also became director of the U-20 team. In 2008 the year he was promoted to Head Coach of the National Team, replacing Hiroshi Ohashi.

After finishing his studies at Meiji University, Sasaki started working at Nippon Telegraph and Telephone and joined their company team NTT Kanto. He played as a midfielder and defender. He played a role in the club’s rise from Division 1 to Japan Soccer League Division 2 in 1986.
Sasaki was the head coach for Japan Football League side Omiya Ardija in 1998. Sasaki later was appointed to various positions at Omiya including head coach of the youth team and director of development.
