He is the author of Inside North Korea: Diary of A Mad Place that was released in 2004. It was originally translated to Japanese in the hands of Midori Segi and published in Japan in 2001.

She said my vision, my goals, my projects, were worth much more to me. And afterwards, I realised she was right. I do not want to sacrifice my family. But I know my wife and her partner are taking care of my children, and that they are safe and healthy. But the North Korean children are not”, stated Vollertsen back in 2003.

Vollertsen was a physician during his time in North Korea from 1999 to 2001, working with his organization, the Cap Anamur Committee, a non-governmental organization for cooperation. He was in August of 1999 when he along with Francois Large, a second aid worker, gave their skins for Pak Jong Thae, a tractor factory worker from Haeju, South Hwanghae, who had been burned for three quarters of his body. He underwent three skin transplants. To acknowledge his efforts, Vollertsen received the official Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s Friendship Medal for his humanitarian aid later in the same month in an event attended by Supreme People’s Assembly vice-president Yang Hyong Sop. Additionally, he was given the right to travel around the country at his own pace and without restriction, something that was unusual for foreigners.

In his role as an emergency physician taking care of the ailments and injuries of ordinary North Koreans in the countryside He was battling the absence of a healthcare system, extreme poverty, and increasing evidence of a system of political prisons within North Korea that enforced the transfer of wealth from citizens into an organization based in Pyongyang Korean People’s Army and the Workers Party of Korea, which was led by Kim Jong-il. Through smuggled cameras, he gathered images and film of massive, blatant human rights violations that took place in North Korea. Particularly that, mass starvation was used as a means of control by the government. He began accumulating evidence of the abuses, which was passed on to an uninvited United States Congress man, in a move for which he was placed under surveillance. However, Vollertsen continued to voice his opinion about North Korea. North Korean government, which eventually lost patience and ordered him to quit North Korea in January 2001. When he returned home and giving an interview regarding his experience while in North Korea, which the North Korean government denounced.

In September 2006, Vollertsen claimed that he had been attacked by a gang and had been run over by a taxi while in Seoul prior to giving a speech on North Korea.
