Omar al-Qattan is one of the most popular and richest Film Director who was born on May 4, 1964 in Beirut, Beirut Governorate, Lebanon. Al-Qattan was born in Beirut, Lebanon to Palestinian parents. He was the son of Abdel Mohsin al-Qattan, was originally from Jaffa where his family fled along with many other Arabs due to the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, becoming refugees. Their mother Leila Miqdadi who was originally from Tulkarem and Tulkarem, also fled Palestine together with her entire family during 1948. The couple’s parents got married in Kuwait in the country where they began their careers as teachers, prior to when Abdel Mohsin first joined the Kuwaiti government as a senior manager , and later started his own construction business. The family was granted citizenship in 1964, before moving into Beirut in 1975 in the year 1975, where Omar lived until 11 years old. In 1975 the conflict, which was the Lebanese Civil War, drove the family away and Omar was moved to England where he was enrolled in an boarding school. After graduating at the age of 22, Omar spent 7 months at Cairo studying Arabic and Islamic literature and history. Following this, Omar earned a Bachelor’s Degree in English Language and Literature from the University of Oxford. After graduation, he enrolled in the INSAS Film School in Brussels.

The studio produced Tale of the Three Jewels (1995) as well as Forbidden Marriages in the Holy Land (1996). The first became the only feature completely shot in the Israeli-occupied Gaza Strip and received several international awards following its debut during the Directors’ Fortnight, Cannes. The documentary on mixed marriages between Jews as well as Arabs in Israel and Palestine. In 1995, we also witnessed the debut of Going Home the documentary about Derek Cooper, a British veteran of the Palestine Mandate that highlighted the crucial importance of remembering and justice as part of reconciliation. During this period, Al-Qattan began to give increasing attention to the A. M. Qattan Foundation, an independent institution established by his parents to support cultural and educational development in Palestine and the Arab World, launching its principal activities and establishing its operations in the Occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip through three major tracks: the Qattan Centre for Educational Research & Development which supports school teachers to develop and improve their professional skills and knowledge; the Qattan Centre for the Child in Gaza City, a cultural centre for children under the age of 15 including a major library, theatre, IT lab and other facilities, including a mobile outreach programme; and the Culture & Arts Programme, a pioneering and diverse funding mechanism for the arts, particularly among young people which is today one of the largest – and most prestigious – independently funded programmes of its kind in the region, working across the disciplines, including film and television, including the Palestinian Audio- visual Project and the Gaza Music School. In late 2008, the Programme also opened The Mosaic Rooms, a gallery and small cultural space in London focused on Arab culture which Al-Qattan continues to curate. The Foundation is today considered a pioneer and leader in its fields, both regionally and internationally.

The first film he made in full-length, Dreams & Silence, was a documentary that debuted in 1991. The film featured an Palestinian woman who had fled Jordan and her struggle with the social and religious restrictions that surrounded her during an era of tension and stress following the invasion of Iraq of Kuwait. The documentary was awarded the Joris Ivens Award and was shown across five European countries as well as Australia. In the similar year Al-Qattan was able to settle in London which is where he set up together with Khleifi Sourat UK in 1992, which later became Sindibad Films Ltd in 1993.

Omar al-Qattan (Arabic: `mr Qattan, also known as lqTn ) (born on May 4 1964) is a Palestinian Kuwaiti British film director, producer and an expert in cultural development.

Al-Qattan began his filmmaking career by directing 15 to 20 minute dramas and documentaries while attending film school. Among them was his debut documentary, Je suis…tu is it? (1987) as well as his debut dramatic La Danse (1988), then the award-winning drama Tale of the Blind Man and the Paralytic in 1989, telecast by Canal+.

In 2000 and 2001 Al-Qattan also co-directed Muhammad: Legacy of a Prophet, a two-hour documentary on Muhammad’s life and his legacy with Muslims in the United States. Produced by Unity Productions Foundation, it was aired on American television by PBS on December 22, 2002. The film was criticized by some right-wing journalists as “too soft on the topic”, but it won great acclaim by the US public. However, Al-Qattan took issue with the final film, which he only partially directed and which he found too bland and conformist.
